The World Cup draw for the finals in South Africa 2010 was held on Friday in Cape Town, with Charlize Theron taking all the attention away from what would have been a drab affair. The draw did throw up some exciting match-ups, with Group G undoubtedly dubbed the ‘Group of Death’. Group D & E might be tricky encounters for the seeded Germans & Dutch, but Italy, England & Spain have groupings that look like a breeze. But then again, it is the World Cup!

Charlize all excited at the beginning of the draw

Charlize Theron was in striking red for the draw, looking all excited as the draw began, but subsequently was clearly bored as the draw took some nearly 20 minutes or so to complete. I would have been bored too if it wasn’t for her.

Interesting facts:

  • In every World Cup he has ever played, Wayne Rooney has been sent off for stamping on someone’s privates.
  • New Zealand have only ever won once in their 90-year history against European & South American opposition. They beat Georgia 3-1 in 2006.
  • Fernando Torres didn’t score a single goal in Spain’s WC Qualifiers despite Spain setting a record by winning all of them
  • Landon Donovan has 120 caps for USA. He is only 27.
